A new report published by the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and another organization called the Fauna & Flora International (FFI) has identified 131 wild magnolias that are in danger of extinction. Worldwide, there are 245 species. You can download the report, titled the Red List of the Magnoliaceae from BGCI. Here's the link:

At the conference this week, the BGCI will be launching China's Strategy for Plant Conservation which will hopefully strengthen the conservation efforts of Chinese magnolias. I am so excited to be a part of this conference! The Red List report shows the amazing amount of work that BGCI has already done in developing a strategy for the conservation of Magnoliaceae. I look forward to posting additional information that I learn from the conference concerning this work.

Dear Eliazabeth Haegel
We are a group of ALevel/high school students from Singapore and we are hoping that we can be able to have an email interview with you.
In Singapore, one of our ALevel subjects is Project Work which is a subject whereby us students have to follow the given topics of each year and come up with projects regarding the topic.
Our topic this year is Conservation.
Our group is proposing the idea of Magnolia conservation in Singapore and we think that you are the correct person that we should interview. I have recently read from your blog regarding your trip to the Botanic Gardens Conservation International Congress in Wuhan, China and I also understand that you are currently involved in some conservation works or studies regarding magnolias.
I think that your experience, observations and knowledge would be highly beneficial to our proposal and we sincerely hope to be able to have an email interview with you.
I apologise that this request has to been so informally but I am unable to email you.
Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely
